Darrell Davis, Fellow - Arlington, TX
Composition is what drives the work of Darrell Davis. His journey in sculpture began after a visit to Brookgreen Gardens, Murrells inlet South Carolina, as a teenager. For Texan Darrell Davis, sculpting wildlife was an easy choice. I've always liked animals, maybe because I'm an only child - they were my brothers and sisters. There are so many different species that I never got bored".

Early on, he never really liked art classes, but he had a change of heart after visiting South Carolina's Brookgreen Sculpture Gardens at 15. I remember seeing the big aluminum horses out in front of the garden and thinking they were pretty incredible. It took me longer to walk around them than anyone else, and I knew then that's what I wanted to do".
He studied fine art at the University of Texas at Arlington, followed by graduate courses in landscape architecture. All the old sculptors were also architects. We studied architecture and sculptors, and I learned a great deal about design and composition".
Before starting a sculpture, Darrell researches his subject, often visiting the Dallas and Fort Worth zoos and the nearby Fossil Rim Wildlife Park to see animals in action. Often the animal will hit a position that just clicks and I think it will look nice sculpturally. I research my subjects wherever I am; whether visiting a zoo or while sport fishing with friends."
In 2013 Darrell was awarded the Gold Medal and Maurice B Hexter prize at the National Sculpture Society 80th Annual Exhibition held at the Tampa Museum of Art and Brookgreen Gardens SC. Darrell is a signature member of the National Sculpture Society, National Sculptors' Guild, American Society of Marine Artists, Society of Animal Artists, and California Art Club.
Darrell currently maintains his sculpting studio in Arlington, TX where he resides with his wife, where he is active in the local art scene.
