The National Sculptors' Guild placed Fellow Jane DeDecker's "Harriet Tubman" in Mesa, Arizona in 1995.
The bronze sculpture honors the great contributions of the renowned abolitionist and her role in the Underground Railroad, helping to free hundreds of slaves in the mid 1800's from the American South to Canada. The figurative artwork depicts Tubman walking and holding the hand of a young boy. DeDecker captures both compassion and a steely determination in the features of Miss Tubman’s face. The folds of their clothes indicate that the two are on a journey.
Included on the bronze base is the quote... “Children, if you are tired, keep going; if you’re hungry, keep going; if you’re scared, keep going. If you want a taste of freedom, keep going.” -Harriet Tubman
